The students' English speaking achievement was abysmal. The aims of this study were to determine: (1) the extent of improvement in speaking skills with and without the use of the direct instructional strategy, and (2) whether there was a notable improvement in the speaking skills of students who received the direct instructional strategy compared to those who did not. This study employed quasi-experimental research methodology. A total of 16 students were selected as a sample, with 16 students assigned to the experimental class and another 16 students assigned to the control class. The data were gathered by the administration of an oral examination. The data were analysed using both paired sample t-tests and independent sample t-tests. Through data analysis, it was determined that there was a notable surge in pupils' proficiency in oral communication. The paired sample t-test yielded a t-test statistic of -28.428 and a significance value of 0.00, which was less than the predetermined significance level of α (0.05). This demonstrates an enhancement in students' oral communication abilities. Furthermore, the results of the independent sample t-test indicate that the calculated t-test value (-13.075) and the corresponding p-value (0.00) were both below the predetermined significance level (α) of 0.05. The results indicate a substantial disparity in the average speaking abilities of pupils who received teaching through the direct instruction technique compared to those who did not get such instruction.
Bima Segara Jaya Nur Iman Dio Resta Permana Nike Angraini ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-06-07 2024-06-07 23 1 1 22 10.33096/tamaddun.v23i1.698 Culture of Interfaith Tolerance in Multicultural Communities In Mbawa Village, Donggo District, Bima Regency http://103.133.36.82/index.php/tamaddun-life/article/view/692
The people of Mbawa Village, Donggo Subdistrict, Bima Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, consist of various monotheist religions, such as Islam, Catholicism and Protestantism. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates literary sociology, feminist literary criticism, and postcolonial studies, this research provides a comprehensive understanding of how the novel reflects the author's critique of patriarchal societal structures and colonial impacts on indigenous women. The analysis focuses on the main character, Sukartini, highlighting her struggle for equality and autonomy. Despite being educated and progressive, Sukartini is depicted as trapped within socio-cultural and political constraints, influenced by entrenched patriarchal norms and colonial domination. This study reveals the dual layers of oppression faced by women, emphasizing the compounded struggles due to both gender and colonial subjugation. By examining Sukartini's character, the research illustrates how deeply ingrained patriarchal norms and colonial dominance restrict women's roles and voices. The findings contribute to Indonesian literary sociology by expanding the scope of analysis to include gender and postcolonial issues, underscoring the importance of examining literary works through multiple theoretical lenses. Moreover, the study highlights the role of literature in spreading awareness, providing social critique, and inspiring advocacy for gender equality and justice. "Belenggu" serves as a poignant critique of historical and ongoing gender inequality, reinforcing the relevance of literary analysis in understanding and addressing complex social issues. This research offers a nuanced perspective on the socio-political contexts shaping narratives, advocating for continued scholarly attention to literature as a means of promoting social change and a more equitable society.
Muhammad Rapi Tang Ridwan Ridwan Inayah Maharezki Junaedi ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-06-07 2024-06-07 23 1 43 50 10.33096/tamaddun.v23i1.714 Evolving Traditions: The Contemporary Dynamics of Uang Panai' in Bugis-Makassar Wedding Ceremonies http://103.133.36.82/index.php/tamaddun-life/article/view/713
The tradition of "uang panai'", a traditional dowry in Bugis-Makassar wedding ceremonies, plays a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary societal changes. This study adopts a qualitative ethnographic approach to explore the evolving criteria for determining the price of uang panai' and its implications on social dynamics within the Bugis-Makassar community. Data were collected through observations and interviews with informants from various districts, supplemented by literature studies. The findings reveal that while lineage remains a predominant criterion, factors such as wealth, education, and occupation have gained significant importance. Wealthy and noble families often demand higher uang panai' to maintain their social status and ensure compatible marital matches. Education and occupation also significantly influence the dowry's value, reflecting the community's increasing emphasis on social mobility and economic stability. This study's novelty lies in its detailed examination of the interplay between traditional practices and modern socioeconomic factors, providing a comprehensive understanding of uang panai's' evolving role. The research highlights the dual function of uang panai' as a symbol of respect and a potential source of economic pressure, offering insights for balancing cultural preservation with economic realities. These findings contribute to the broader discourse on cultural adaptation and suggest avenues for future research on mitigating financial burdens associated with traditional practices. By elucidating the contemporary dynamics of uang panai', this study enhances our understanding of cultural practices and their adaptation in a rapidly changing society.
Nur Masthurah Fatimah Hidayahni Amin Seny Luhriyani Sunusi Nurharsya Khaer Hanafie Andi Riswan Mohamad ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-06-07 2024-06-07 23 1 51 60 10.33096/tamaddun.v23i1.713 Exploring Lecturers’ Perceptions of Multiple Intelligence-based Instruction in Teaching English for Islamic Studies http://103.133.36.82/index.php/tamaddun-life/article/view/589
This paper aims to explore lecturers’ perceptions on multiple intelligence-based instruction in teaching English for Islamic studies. The key question is how lecturers understand the concept of MI-based instruction. This study was conducted at one of the Islamic universities in Indonesia involving three lecturers. The instruments used were multiple intelligence inventory questionnaires and interview guidelines. The data found that teaching and learning activities should be designed to enhance each student's different intelligences, facilitating strength intelligence. Students not only have language and mathematics intelligence but also have several different intelligences owned by students, including: verbal linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, visual-spatial, bodily kinesthetic, naturalistic, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and existential intelligence. MI-based teaching provides a new outlook in improving the quality of teaching and meaningful learning. MI-based instruction respects each student's learning style, which is indicated by the student's preference in learning. Therefore, using MI-based instruction in the teaching and learning process will be easy, fun, and respect everyone's way of receiving material. This study encourages future research on connecting the understanding of the multiple intelligences of lecturers with the needs of students in the process of learning English for Islamic studies.
Sahril Sahril Muhammad Basri Sahril Nur ##submission.copyrightStatement## 2024-06-08 2024-06-08 23 1 61 77 10.33096/tamaddun.v23i1.589 An Analysis of Euphemism in The Captions of Folkative Instagram Accounts http://103.133.36.82/index.php/tamaddun-life/article/view/669
This research discusses about “An Analysis of Euphemism in the captions of Folkative Instagram accounts”.
